Finances

At Sussex Learning Trust, strong financial stewardship underpins everything we do. We are committed to managing public funds responsibly and transparently, ensuring that every decision supports our goal of delivering high-quality education across our academies.

Our Financial Priorities

Our finance strategy is shaped by five key priorities:

  • Best Value: We aim to invest wisely, directing resources to the areas that have the greatest impact on students’ learning and well-being.

  • Sustainable Growth: As the Trust expands, we are developing operating models that are financially sustainable and adaptable to future needs.

  • Strategic Reserves: We maintain appropriate reserves to help manage financial risk and meet medium-term challenges with confidence.

  • Compliance and Professionalism: We operate in full compliance with financial regulations, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and transparency.

  • Maximising Value and Income: We continuously seek opportunities to increase income and drive efficiency, ensuring that we do more with the resources we have.

Navigating a Challenging Financial Climate

Like many multi-academy trusts, Sussex Learning Trust operates in an increasingly complex and uncertain financial environment. Rising costs, combined with changes to government funding and the reduction of specific grants, place sustained pressure on school budgets.

In response, we take a rigorous approach to financial planning. This includes:

  • Long-term strategic budgeting aligned with school improvement goals

  • Strong cash flow and risk management

  • A shared understanding across leadership teams of how to deliver excellent education within finite resources

Value for Money and Ethical Spending

We believe ethical leadership means spending public money prudently, and for the benefit of children in our schools. While academy conversion once offered financial advantages, this is no longer the case. Today, the value lies in the collaborative strength of being part of a multi-academy trust.

Schools joining Sussex Learning Trust often ask: “What does it cost, and what do we receive in return?”

Each year, the government allocates funding to the Trust for every academy. From this, we apply a modest Annual Partnership Contribution (APC). This contribution funds a wide range of services that support school improvement, including leadership development, compliance, financial services, governance support, and strategic planning.

Crucially, the services funded by the APC are designed to enhance the quality of education, directly support Academy Development Plans, and contribute meaningfully to each school’s improvement journey.

Our executive leadership team is committed to ensuring that every pound spent adds value, and that our academies are equipped to thrive both financially and educationally.
